When I first heard about the PTE Academic, I was exactly where you probably are right now — a little confused, not sure if it was the right test, and wondering whether it was worth the time and money.

What Is the PTE Academic Exam?
The PTE Academic — formally called the Pearson Test of English Academic — is a computer-based English language proficiency test developed and administered by Pearson, one of the world’s largest education companies.
Unlike IELTS, which uses human examiners to assess speaking and writing, PTE Academic is primarily scored by AI. Pearson’s current scoring system scores all question types by AI, and some tasks also include human expert review of content before the final score is finalized. The test measures all four language skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening.
The test takes about two hours and is taken at an authorized Pearson test center. Your results are usually available quickly — often within two days, though Pearson says they can take up to five working days.

Who Actually Needs the PTE Exam?
The PTE Academic is accepted by universities, governments, and professional bodies worldwide. But for Sri Lankan students, the overwhelming majority of demand comes from one purpose: migration and study visa applications, primarily for Australia and New Zealand.
Here are the four main groups of Sri Lankan students who sit PTE Academic:
- Sri Lankans applying for Australian Permanent Residency (PR) — PTE Academic is one of the approved English tests for Australian visa purposes under the Department of Home Affairs.
- Students applying to universities in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, or Canada — many institutions in these countries accept PTE Academic as proof of English proficiency.
- Professionals seeking a skilled worker visa — including nurses assessed by AHPRA, engineers, accountants, and teachers.
- Students who tried IELTS and missed their target — PTE gives a different format and often a second chance to hit the same score requirement.
A note on PTE Academic UKVI: if your purpose is a UK visa application, you specifically need PTE Academic UKVI, which is a separate Secure English Language Test pathway with an additional SELT reference for UK visa use. Standard PTE Academic is not the same booking.

PTE Academic vs PTE Core: Know the Difference
This is one of the most common points of confusion I see — especially among students targeting Canada.
PTE Academic is designed for study visa applications, university entry, and many skilled migration pathways to Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and beyond.
PTE Core is a separate test specifically designed for Canadian immigration pathways, including Express Entry and other programs that follow IRCC language-test rules.
If you’re targeting Canada PR, you need PTE Core — not PTE Academic. They test the same four skills, but they are different tests with different purposes, formats, and score requirements. Many of my students don’t find this out until after booking the wrong test.
The 3 Sections and 4 Skills of the PTE Exam Explained
The PTE Academic test is delivered in one continuous session that typically lasts around two hours. It covers four language skills across a series of task types — and here is something most students don’t realize: some task types score more than one skill at once.
For example, Read Aloud contributes to both your Speaking and Reading performance. Understanding this overlap is essential to building an efficient preparation plan.

The speaking section is where most of my students lose marks — not because their English is poor, but because they don’t understand what the AI is actually listening for. That is why I push students to work on oral fluency, response control, and pronunciation from the beginning.

How Is the PTE Exam Scored?
The PTE Academic uses a scoring system that runs from 10 to 90 points, aligned to the Global Scale of English (GSE) and mapped to CEFR levels.
Your score report shows an overall score plus four communicative skill scores: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. In your myPTE account, you can also view a Skills Profile that gives more detailed feedback across language skill areas. For visa and university purposes, what matters most is your overall score and your four communicative skill scores.
One important detail: your overall score is not a simple average of the four skills. Pearson calculates it from your performance across the entire test.

How Long Is the PTE Exam, and When Do You Get Results?
The full PTE Academic test runs for about two hours from start to finish. There are no scheduled breaks — the session is continuous.
Once your test is complete, Pearson processes your results and you typically receive your scorecard quickly. Many students receive results in 24–48 hours, though Pearson says results can take up to five working days. Your score report is sent to your registered email and is also accessible through your myPTE account.
Your PTE Academic score is generally valid for two years from the test date. After that, you will usually need to retest if your score report is required for a new application.
On the day of the exam, bring the same valid passport you used to register. Pearson test centers also use palm vein recognition and other security checks as part of their identity verification process.
Is PTE Easier Than IELTS? The Honest Answer
This is the question I get asked most often. And my answer is always the same: PTE is not easier. It is different. And when you understand the difference, it becomes very manageable.
IELTS speaking and writing are assessed by human examiners who apply a level of judgment and context that the PTE system does not apply in the same way. PTE is built around a computer-based scoring model and highly structured task performance.
What this means for preparation: PTE rewards specific, repeatable techniques. Once you understand the patterns the test rewards — in oral fluency, pronunciation, essay structure, and reading speed — you can improve systematically. That systematic improvability is the reason many of my students hit their target score faster with PTE than they did with repeated IELTS attempts.
My own experience: I scored 70 in speaking on my first attempt while being a university lecturer. That 70 had nothing to do with my English ability. It had everything to do with not understanding what Pearson’s system was listening for. The moment I adjusted my approach to match how the exam evaluates oral fluency and pronunciation, my speaking score went to 90.

How to Book the PTE Exam in Sri Lanka
PTE Academic tests in Sri Lanka are conducted at authorized Pearson test centers, with Colombo being the main location most students look at first. You book directly through your Pearson account.
The process in brief:
- Create or log in to your Pearson account.
- Select “Book a test” and choose PTE Academic.
- Select Sri Lanka and your preferred test center.
- Choose an available date and time slot.
- Pay the registration fee and receive your confirmation email.
Test center availability in Colombo can fill up quickly, especially for weekend morning slots. I recommend booking at least four to six weeks in advance, and ideally before you begin your preparation — a real deadline is one of the most effective motivation tools you’ll have.

Is PTE accepted for Australian PR?
Yes. PTE Academic is one of the accepted English tests for Australian visa purposes. But the exact score you need depends on the visa pathway and whether you are only meeting the minimum English requirement or also trying to claim extra migration points.
What PTE score do I need for Australia?
The minimum varies by visa type and by the level of English you need to prove. For tests taken under Australia’s current rules, Competent English starts at 50 in each skill. Higher levels such as Proficient and Superior English use higher minimums and can be skill-specific, so always check the current Department of Home Affairs tables for your exact visa and points strategy.
How many times can I retake the PTE exam?
Pearson lets you book another test after you have received the scores from your last test. There is also a retake cap within a 12-month period, so retaking too early still costs you both money and attempts. My recommendation: only sit the exam when you are consistently hitting your target score on high-quality mock tests.
Is PTE valid for Canada?
PTE Academic is accepted by many Canadian institutions for study. However, for Canadian PR and immigration pathways through IRCC, you need PTE Core — not PTE Academic.
What is the difference between PTE Academic and PTE Core?
PTE Academic is the standard test for study and many migration-related purposes in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. PTE Core was built specifically for Canadian immigration use. If your goal is Canada PR or Express Entry, you need PTE Core. If your goal is Australia, New Zealand, or many university pathways, you are usually looking at PTE Academic.

Use the same valid passport you used during registration, and double-check the exact ID requirement in your booking confirmation and myPTE account before test day. For Sri Lankan students, the passport is the key document you should plan around.
How many days does it take to prepare for the PTE exam?
The honest answer depends entirely on your starting point and target score. From my experience coaching Sri Lankan students: if you are currently around 50 and need 65, a focused four- to eight-week preparation plan is realistic. If you are at 65 and need 79+, expect eight to fourteen weeks of targeted work. The faster your timeline, the more structured your preparation needs to be.
